How to print with the Virtual Printer

Once set-up correctly, using the Scilife Virtual Printer is straightforward.

Here are a few key points to be aware of before you are able to attempt your first print via the virtual printer.

  • Ensure that you have installed the latest version of the MSI
  • Define at least one Category Type
  • Add at least one Approved Printer
  • If it is the first time you are printing, via the Scilife application, a pop-up will appear asking you to input a URL.  For subsequent uses the same URL will be expected unless changed.

  • Input your Scilife username and password for the chosen environment, unless you are using SSO in which case you will be logged in.

How to print using the virtual printer

  1. Always Select Scilife - Controlled Print for the print destination. 
    • When printing a document from Scilife print by selecting Regular/ Controlled Print for anything else outside of the application you will print in the usual way depending on where you are printing from.
  2. The MSI screen will automatically pop-up where you can edit/ select the required information from the fields available.  

    • During this editing phase the MSI will indicate that changes are pending.
  3. Print to your chosen location.

    • Once the MSI has successfully sent the item to your printer / printing application the status will change to 'Preview up to date' and there will be a message to let you know that the 'Document sent to printer!'
  Relevant for: Administrators / Managers / Regular Users

 Please note: 

  • Printer location can be an actual physical printer or a print to pdf
  • A Group(s) will need to be selected before any of the other fields can be selected 
  • Fields that are mandatory will have an * next to them, as indicated in the pop-up
  • Fields that have the # next to them will be printed next to the barcode, as mentioned
  • Once a document has been sent to a printer a record will be created in the Controlled Print List in Scilife
